Gas Boiler Integrated with SUNAMP Thermal Battery for Efficient On-Demand Hot Water
Project: New build in East Yorkshire
We installed an Ideal gas boiler with a SUNAMP hot water system for our customer, delivering efficient heating and on-demand hot water storage through advanced thermal battery technology.
What is a SUNAMP?
A SUNAMP is a thermal energy storage system that stores heat for domestic or commercial hot water and/or space heating. Instead of using traditional water tanks, it uses phase change materials (PCMs) to store energy.
How a SUNAMP Works
1. Energy Input (Charging)
SUNAMP units can be charged using:
Electricity (e.g., off-peak, solar PV, grid)
Heat from a boiler or heat pump
Renewable sources (e.g., wind or solar thermal)
This energy heats a Phase Change Material (PCM) inside the unit.
2. Phase Change Material (PCM)
The PCM melts when it absorbs heat, storing a large amount of energy.
The PCM used is often salt-based and changes phase at around 58–65°C, making it ideal for domestic hot water.
This works similarly to how ice absorbs heat when it melts — but at a higher temperature and with much higher energy density.
